What is translation? What is a translator’s task, and how do they make stylistic and connotative decisions? Which works deserve to be translated, and who are the arbiters who decide that? Why do some translators aspire to produce a text of familiarity and others, of foreignness?  How do we engage with the limits of translatability? These are some of the questions we will be working through in this course. Along with such questions that relate to the generality of translation, we will home in on the specific challenges of translating from the Yiddish.
