This course examines the eruv, a Jewish legal construct that permits carrying objects within a defined boundary on the Sabbath. Students will analyze the historical and legal development of the eruv, its impact on community formation, and its diverse manifestations in contemporary environments, with a focus on the ritual practices associated with its establishment and use. Through the study of legal texts, case studies, and ethnographic research, students will critically evaluate the symbolic and practical implications of eruvin in diverse social settings and analyze the controversies surrounding their construction and use.
