This introductory course explores the fundamentals of early childhood education and is designed for individuals preparing for a career in teaching and caring for young children. It examines the historical and theoretical foundations of the field alongside the influence of standards-based instruction and assessment on current program practices.
Students investigate the full scope of early childhood programs, from infant and toddler care through the early elementary years, and the practices best suited to each developmental level. Throughout, the course emphasizes the importance of working effectively with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
To connect theory with practice, students complete a 24-hour field experience in an early childhood education or care setting, observing course concepts at work in real classrooms and programs.
